Makeability Lab
Wearable AR and real-time computer vision research for low vision sports at UW Makeability Lab.
Paper
Blind and low vision athletes often struggle to track fast-moving balls in sports — tennis balls can disappear against court clutter and move too quickly to follow with standard vision alone.
Towards Real-time Computer Vision and Augmented Reality to Support Low Vision Sports: A Demonstration of ARTennis presents ARTennis, a wearable augmented reality prototype that uses real-time computer vision (YOLOv8) to detect the ball and enhance its saliency on court. Visual augmentations were co-designed with low vision participants to match how they actually perceive the ball.
The work was published as a demonstration at UIST 2023.
